Trying to Run Mechwarrior 4: Mercs with WINE

To summarize this post: don’t try. If you want to know why, keep reading πŸ˜‰ If you’ve gotten it to work, please leave a post and tell how.

MW4 installed without a hitch. (sound and everything!) Just mount the CD and type wine /mnt/cdrom/setup.exe go through the install as normal and then eject the CD and mount disk 2 when you’re asked. This is as far as you can get. Attempting to run the game will result in a sharing violation and WINE exiting. At first I thought that this was just a configuration problem since trying to run the game after the install would prompt me to put the right CD in. I set up D:\ to point to /mnt/cdrom and tried again. The game crashed just like when trying to run from the install program.

After checking the App Database on WINE’s home page I found that other people had trouble running MW4 after a perfect install. After a bit of searching through FAQ’s and WINE documentation proved helpful. It appears to me that the game is copy protected (which would explain why dd wouldn’t work) using safedisc protection. According to the WINE docs safedisc is currently not working but is a planned feature. πŸ™‚

If you absolutely need to play now, you can try cedega or reinstall windows πŸ˜‰
